Chapter 05 The office hallway seemed to stretch on forever as Olivia hesitated, her eyes fixed on the tall figure walking towards her. “Shit," she muttered under her breath, her heart thumping. Chad, her new stepbrother, had his piercing blue eyes staring right through her. It had been a very awkward morning since her mother made that announcement last night. This should not be overly complicated… I took eight steps and the book slid off. “Again.” Charles repeated from the other side of the room. I walked back to the door, putting the book back on my head. I carefully took eleven steps and the book slid off my head. This went on for the next two hours. “If you can make it twenty steps without dropping the book, I will let you take a break.” I nodded quietly and kept trying. “We should celebrate tonight. Your favorite takeout, some wine just the two of us. What do you say?” I nodded. “Sounds perfect.” She smiled again and backed toward the door. “I’ll let you have a moment. But hurry downstairs soon or I’m starting without you.” I laughed, and when the door shut behind her, I sat back down slowly. My laptop still sat open beside me, the email glowing. I’d be starting school in two months. Moving into a dorm. Joining a campus full of strangers who didn’t know me, who didn’t see me as just someone’s daughter or stepsister.

Their soft laughter followed me up the steps, making my skin crawl. I climbed the stairs slowly, exhaustion weighing down every step. The house was quiet now, everyone retreating to their own spaces. My room waited at the end of the hall like a sanctuary. I just needed to get through one more day. One party where I’d smile and nod and play the role of grateful step-daughter. Then maybe, maybe, things would calm down. The brothers would get bored. Their attention would shift elsewhere. Even as I thought it, I knew it was a fantasy. They weren’t done with me. Not even close.
