Then she nodded toward the door. “Do you want to take a walk?” she asked. “The deck’s empty.” I glanced at the clock. Past midnight. Most of our undercover guards would be asleep, but some would definitely be around. Hovering. Monitoring. “Alright,” I said. “But just for a bit. I need to move around and feel the cold.” We slipped out into the night. The deck was cool beneath our bare feet, smooth and faintly damp from the sea air. The ship creaked softly as it cut through the water, the sound low and constant, like a living thing shifting in its sleep.

I secured the final fold of the bandage. “I’m done,” I said quietly. Before he could respond, his phone vibrated sharply against the wood. The sudden sound sliced through the room. He glanced at the screen, it was one of the warehouse boys. His expression shifted, then he answered. “What?” The voice on the other end came through faintly, but I could hear enough. “Boss… the shipment from the northern tide… the ‘midnight cargo’… it caught fire before docking.” Midnight cargo. The coded phrase rolled heavily in the air.

Brie Night falls on the trio of ships. During the course of the evening, the ships had been readied, and the camp on the beach had been totally dismantled, leaving no trace that Alex’s pack had ever been there. Now, against a blanket of silver moonlight, the Artemis bobs in the shallows just beyond the mouth of the lagoon, engines purring and sails drawn.

They were still together, still afloat, and for now, it was enough. The night was a shroud that settled over the ship, the horizon a black promise that blurred the line between sea and sky. The crew gathered in its embrace, a circle of exhaustion and hope, their faces pale moons against the darkness. Lanterns flickered, casting shadows that danced like ghosts on the edge of their vision. Amelia rose, her voice a rallying cry that defied the creeping cold. She spoke of loss and resilience, the words pulling them together in a fragile web of belief. Then the shout came, tearing through the night with a different kind of urgency. Sails on the horizon.

Adam said gently. He was always like that. Adam never once messed with me. "Last night, you came to my room, opened the door, and took off my clothes, and you took off yours. The night of New Year's day was extraordinarily cold. Brock stood in the cabin of the ship, and a bloodthirsty light flashed in his fierce and ruthless eyes. The huge scar on his face twitched every once in a while as he smoked his cigarette. The light altered from dark to bright, like a wildfire in the night. There was only a dark circle of light on the ship. The ship was anchored at a dark and unnoticeable corner so that it wouldn't attract any attention. Several figures approached the ship and hopped onto it.

If anything against our hold occurred within the city limits, he would know. "All right. That's what I thought. When is the shipment due?" I asked, moving toward the floor-to-ceiling window and staring out at the ocean. "Tonight. Just before midnight," Cordero answered. "Then make certain the shipyard is covered and our buddies in the Coast Guard are on high alert. If there is another boat in close proximity, I want to know about it." "Will do, boss."

One spat, but I turned a deaf ear to their words and clung to the thought of seeing Rana again after all these years. I stood at the bow as the ship finally pulled into Aethel, my heart pounding. In front of me, the island loomed with jagged cliffs, bathed under an eternal night. Lanterns along the shoreline cast a soft glow upon the dark waters. As I got off the ship, my breath caught. It was true-it was always nighttime here. I followed a line of passengers to the towering walls that surrounded the city. The gates were guarded by people in dark armor, their piercing eyes scanning everyone who approached. When my turn came, I hesitated, my sack clutched tightly in my hands.
