We’re going out for dinner!” The last sentence was directed at Ruth. Ruth could not wrap her head around the situation. She had a weird feeling that she was just a tool right now. In the two’s fight, Pearl was using her to make Tom jealous. But the crucial thing was: Shouldn’t Pearl have chosen a man to be her tool? Even choosing Abel would be better. So why did Pearl choose her? However, when Ruth saw the pleading look hidden beneath the aggressiveness in Pearl’s eyes, Ruth could not find it in her heart to reject her.

Mabel's father explained to Jade who became calm. “And who are you?”. Jade asked Pearl. “She is…” “My name is Pearl, I am your husband's cousin sister”. She looked up at the sky, noticing the sun had almost disappeared. Slowly, but carefully, she stood, trying as much as possible to not make a noise. But she didn't realize there was a huge rock in front of her, making her stumble and almost losing her footing. The footsteps were getting closer. Heart pounding in her chest, Pearl crouched low and grabbed the rock with both hands. Her fingers trembled, slick with sweat. And with a silent prayer, she hurled it as far as she could in the opposite direction, praying they'd chase the noise, and not her.

So I stayed beside her, patting her head gently, over and over, until her breathing evened out and sleep finally claimed her. The next day arrived and it was just as chaotic with Pearl refusing to eat, bathe, and refusing to let anyone touch her or even come near her. She stayed curled up in corners of her room, silent and withdrawn, like a wounded animal and the only person she acknowledged was me. I sat beside her for hours, whispering reassurance. Until she eventually allowed me to bathe her myself and I also cooked for her because she wouldn’t eat anything prepared by anyone else. When I cooked, she stood in the kitchen with me, clutching my dress tightly as if afraid I would disappear.
