I see you, pretty girl. Surrender to us or this won't end well for you if we decide to use our strength," I heard one of the three men say. From their foul smell, I knew they were outsiders. They smelled bad because most outsiders didn't bother to bathe and clean themselves. "We're asking you nicely, dear. Come out while you still can," I heard a man say.

Chapter 1: The Arrival As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the dusty road, a weary traveler approached the outskirts of a mysterious city cloaked in mist. The city seemed to materialize out of thin air, its spires reaching towards the heavens like fingers grasping at the sky. Curiosity mingled with apprehension as the traveler made his way through the imposing gates, their iron bars creaking ominously in the evening breeze. He could sense an air of mystery hanging over the city, like a shroud of secrets waiting to be unraveled.

They came back out carrying my body. Not dragging. Not the casual handling of something disposed of. They carried me carefully. Like there was still something worth protecting. Like whatever I was, wherever I'd come from, it mattered to someone I didn't yet know. Who are you? I strained toward them, trying to see the crest more clearly, trying to read something in their faces — The darkness took me before I could. End of Chapter One
