The rain in Chapter One had been a backdrop for fear. It was cold, confusing, and overwhelming. The rain in Chapter Seventy-Eight was just weather. And weather was a variable we knew how to calculate. I watched from the shadows of the garage bay as three black SUVs screeched to a halt on the wet gravel. In the original timeline, I had been cowering behind a tool chest, clutching a wrench like a lifeline, terrified that these men were coming to kill me for a debt I didn't owe. Dax had been bleeding, desperate, and defensive.

POV DARLENE The lavender mist was gone. In its place, the North had returned to its true, brutal form: White-Out Blizzard and Bone-Chilling Silence. I stood on the ridge overlooking the ruins of the First Square—the exact spot where, one hundred and ninety-two chapters ago, Jackson had looked me in the eye and told me I was "nothing but a burden." Back then, I was a girl with no wolf, shivering in a thin coat, watching my world shatter. Now, the snow didn't make me shiver; it melted before it could even touch my skin, vaporized by the Golden-Emerald Fire that roared in my veins.

Stopping is how they catch you. I drop to the ground on the other side, landing badly, my ankle screaming in protest. I bite my sleeve to keep from crying out. The taste of dirt fills my mouth. Mud coats my knees, my hands, my skin but for the first time, no one yells at me for it. I’m outside. The orphanage looms behind me, dark and hulking, its windows like empty eyes. From here, it looks almost peaceful. It’s not. I turn and run.
