Office Gray says, bowing slightly alongside his partner before they both walk back to their car. I stare once again at the once upon a time vibrant environment that is now clouded with smoke and darkness. A tired sigh escapes my lips when I realise that this may actually just be the beginning. I know it's weird but I just have this feeling that the worst is yet to come and the truth is, the thought of it alone scared me like nothing else.

Somewhere in the city—several stories above, in a steel and glass building—Julian Blackwood lay in his dark, sleek bedroom, staring at the book she had given him. He'd never intended to keep it. When Lena Carter had offered it to him—those gentle words, that thoughtful crease between her eyebrows—he'd intended to refuse. But something in her eyes had taken away his intention. It was neither flirting nor pretense. It was genuine. Silent. Generous. He hated kindness. It broke things open. Julian gazed down at the book. The cover depicted a city landscape and a man’s silhouette overshadowing a skyscraper. “I think you would like this one. It starts out bleak, then it carries on to a happy ending.” Zach accepted the book and opened it up with anticipation. He might as well read something decent knowing it was the last good thing he was going to read before confronting his email inbox the next day. He lost himself in the story in the first ten pages and didn’t look up until he felt something heavy hit his shoulder when he was midway through the book.

She understood the silence, so didn’t feel the need to make small talk. They walked into the compound together. They were met by a marbled trail. The click-clack of their shoes on marble was the only audible sound. Side by side on the trail, stood hulking green ash trees. Their branches sprung out in diverse directions, providing ample shade and giving an eery feel to the trail. The bleak atmosphere made Clarissa pensive. Osward home always gave her the creeps. She couldn’t imagine staying here for the rest of her life. Even the façade she would put on here was just for Chance. All for Chance, she thought.

The oldest inhabitants of Oakland had “never seen the like before,” and they shook their gray heads ominously as over and adown the New England mountains the howling wind swept furiously, now shrieking exultingly as one by one the huge forest trees bent before its power, and again dying away in a low, sad wail, as it shook the casement of some low-roofed cottage, where the blazing fire, “high piled upon the hearth,” danced merrily to the sound of the storm-wind, and then, whirling in fantastic circles, disappeared up the broad-mouthed chimney.
