I shut my eyes and I tuned them all out — my father, Eve, the Elders, the muttering crowd, even my own racing thoughts. I tried to focus on the one thing that mattered. Survival. Water. I pictured it. Cool, heavy rain pounding down. Waves crashing over the fire. A heavy flood wiping all of this away. I held onto that image, clung to it with everything I had. But the more I focused, the hotter the fire got. The flames hissed and crackled, the heat crawling up my legs, and began to eat away at my strength.

I could fight it. Focus. The word echoed through my mind like a mantra. I focused on my breathing, each inhale a battle to regain my strength, each exhale a release of the tension that had wound itself around my bones. Couldn’t let myself get distracted in any way. It was important I kept my head in the game just like I always did at the gym, when I was at work, or really with anything in life. I let the phone slip from my hand and onto the passenger seat. I had to focus now. There were too many things at stake to let myself be distracted by doubt.

An hour later, we found a vast, secluded area with no people around. She prepared me and warned me never to use my power thoughtlessly. "Your strongest weapon is your power of will. Believe that you are in control of your power and that you can do anything with it," Maxine reminded me. She reminded me that there will be times when we feel afraid, panic, and doubt ourselves, causing us to lose control of our abilities—but all of that disappears if you just close your eyes and calm down. "You need to focus on what actually needs to be done."

It gives me some wisdom, guiding me through the depth of my fears, and teaching me to harness the power that resides within me as a woman. "Focus, Hazel." I answer, my tone sharper than intended. ‘Did you hear that Ruelle?’ I ask my wolf. She is eerily silent. ‘Yes. I don’t know who it is though.’ Her tone is cryptic. Doubts creep up in my mind. You need to stay focussed in order to keep your powers in control.” My head snaps and our gazes meet. His implication is clear.

It was so hard and unbearable, there was so much to listen to, abide to, and so much to do. ‘You know what, in order for me to be what I want to be, I have to concentrate on one thing, focus is the only thing I need. I have to look at my studies, fix myself and be able to control my emotions as much as I can. I have to forget about the past, every dirt that I got myself involved in and learn to let go of what let me go. I am tired, really tired of being taken for granted, of being lied to, cheated to, used, and played.

I had explained these things earlier. "Lay low, make them believe we ain't at our best so that they strike and lose." He responded. "Good." I hung up. Sometimes, power wasn't all about showing off, especially times like these when power alone can't help. Something caught my attention, people, especially women were focused on it.
