Luca held Grace. Derek held Hope. Luke held Derek Jr. Grace Marie slept. We were a family. The doorbell rang. Luca answered. Tom stood there. His face was serious. He said Claire had escaped again. I stood up. Tom said she was headed here. Luca locked the door. Eli checked the windows. Luke gathered the children. I called the police. They said they were on their way. We waited. The door rattled. Claire's voice came through the wood. She said she would kill us all.

Melanie stepped out from behind Henry, her face a picture of innocence, yet her smile was anything but. "Selena, this is the maternity ward. How could you just 'pass by'? You're here for Henry, aren't you?" Henry's eyes, complicated and heavy, landed on me, his voice filled with resignation, "Selena, there's no need for this. I told you that we're getting remarried on the first of next month." I stayed quiet, hiding behind Wren, not ready to reveal the truth. Melanie's eyes flashed with anger, and suddenly she clutched her stomach while exclaiming, "My stomach... Is the baby coming?!"

Like he was escaping. "He's been so weird lately," Sophie said. "Working too hard, probably." Melissa gave me a look I couldn't quite read. Like she'd seen something. After dinner, everyone migrated to the living room for a movie. I sat through thirty minutes before claiming exhaustion. Sophie hugged me goodnight. "I'm so happy you're here. This is going to be the best Christmas."

I questioned, almost tearing up. “If you have any unfinished business with them, I guess you should sort it out.” Mr. Lucian put out his hand. Taking his hand, I faked a smile. “Thank you,” I replied, shutting my eyes closed, as I watched him leave. “We are traveling next week, Ms. Etta.” Clara chipped in. “What for?” I asked. “You need to feature in the America movie coming up this Christmas,” Clara explained. “Clara, can you leave me and Elsie for a few minutes?” I signaled her to leave with my hand.
