I opened it and found myself entering a smaller version of the library downstairs. There was no swirling staircase going up, up, up, rather walls full of books, some of which were only accessible via the sliding ladder off to the side. With my stomach full and heart heavy, I waltzed over to one of the shelves and scanned them, intending to pick a book at random. One in particular drew my eye. The cover was made of dark leather, embossed with a swirling gold font that was a bit hard to read. Tendrils of flame, interwoven with threads of shadow, danced up the spine and around the back.

From within its center, two faint red eyes opened. You are not the first. I stumbled back. You are not the last. The whisper wasn’t heard with ears. It was felt, deep inside, pressing into my chest like a weight. “Run!” Damien’s voice finally echoed from the dark. But none of us moved. The shadow surged forward—not to attack, but to the pedestal. In one motion, it consumed the book. The leather burned in an instant, curling into ash. I screamed. “No!” But the book was gone. Everything we had just learned. Everything we could have used.

Alicia’s POV The library smelled normal, like old paper and new fine prints too, the kind of place that always felt safer than the real world. I tucked myself deeper into the corner carrel on the third floor, my legs folded under me on the hard wooden chair, a paperback cracked open on my lap. I didn’t say whether I liked it or not.” This surprised a laugh out of Brad. “Touché.” “I’m just messing with you,” the man said, wearing an infectious grin. “I thought it was a great book, creepy and atmospheric. The movie adaptation, on the other hand . . . that was a real stinker.”

One more lie had been erased. He walked to the back of Marcus’s SUV and used a finger to write in the layer of canyon dust on the rear window: SILENCE. He then took the laminated card—the same design as the one left for Julian—and placed it in Marcus’s lifeless hand. The silk has been cut.
