When I got to the hallway, I stopped and leaned against the wall, taking a deep breath. I couldn’t read the book with her there. If she saw it—or even guessed what it was—she would run straight to whoever she could to make my life even more miserable. And if she found out about the fire… the silver flame… the strange powers I didn’t even understand yet… I didn’t want to think about what she would do. I looked down at my hands. They looked normal now. But just last night, one of them had been glowing. I needed answers. And that book might be the only place I could find them.

I didn’t have to bother for long as a book suddenly began to glow so brightly that I was almost blinded. I staggered back. My heart was racing. I was creeped out by the strange things happening but still, I felt inclined to pick up the glowing book. I hesitated for a few seconds before reaching out for the glowing book. Immediately I touched it, the glow disappeared. I glanced at the book in my hands. It was a pink diary. Curiosity flashed through my eyes. Why is a diary stacked among books and why did it lead me here? I opened up the first page. It had only one sentence.

The air shimmered, distorted by heat and magic. She dismounted, her boots sinking into scorched soil still warm beneath her feet. Ahead, the crater steamed , wide, deep, and glowing from within. Sienna stepped forward, drawn by something she couldn’t resist. At the crater’s center lay the shard , a massive fragment of translucent crystal, humming with the same pulse as her wrist. It was beautiful, terrible, alive. Her fingers twitched. She should have feared it. Every instinct screamed to stay back. Yet the closer she drew, the more the world seemed to fade , sound dulling, color draining, until only the shard remained, a beacon in the void.
