I walked to the kitchen and found a pot of chicken porridge simmering on the stove. A sticky note clung to the lid with Stanley's scribbled message. Without reading it, I peeled it off and tossed it into the trash. The apartment, a two-bedroom unit, was eerily quiet. I pushed open the door to the second bedroom. It had been stripped bare—no trace of Nancy remained. Even the bed was new. Stanley had clearly made an effort to erase her presence, as if I wouldn't notice.

He yanked my leather satchel. He dumped its contents onto the marble floor. My things scattered. There, gleaming against the dark stone, was a teardrop moonstone. Ronan put the first thief down and did not look to see if he would rise. “The piece. Now.” The second thief got the slab up to his knee. I hit him before he could stand. The piece slammed back into the gap. The sound made my marked-from-nothing arm ache anyway, like the stone knew I was near.
