I stared in the mirror, stunned. My cheeks were flushed, my eyes bright, my hair swept up elegantly. The dress hugged my frame perfectly. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so beautiful.
Jen smiled at me in the mirror. “I must admit, ma’am. You look like a goddess.”
I gave a small smile, still taken aback. “Thank you,” I murmured, turning this way and that, marveling at my reflection.
Then, suddenly, the door to my room burst open, and Mr. Graham strode in. His expression was stormy, his voice cold and clipped. “Isn’t she ready yet?”
