I called the meeting for a Sunday. Not a crisis meeting. Not an emergency assembly. I sent the message on Thursday giving everyone three days notice which was the kind of timeline that communicated importance without urgency. The difference mattered. This club had spent too long responding to urgent things. This conversation deserved the quality of attention that only came when people arrived unrushed. Sunday morning. War room. Ten o'clock. Everyone came.

Being at the coffee shop on Sundays was becoming a quick trend, and I wasn't sure how I felt about it. Partly, I wasn't sure how my light allowance felt about being drained, but mostly I was beginning to think I'd have all of my life-changing revelations at Brew Brothers.

I hiss aloud. It's 11 p.m., and everyone should be at home scrubbing themselves clean of the fifth their bodies have sustained throughout the day. While I sat across the street this morning, I noticed that the club's east wing had been temporarily closed. The large sign that read: 'CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE' Could be seen from the main road. I had intended to set fire to the entire building.

"Every Sunday morning? You always insisted on taking the route past that coffee shop because you loved the smell of fresh pastries." I stare at him like he just announced he's actually a lizard person. "What are you talking about?" "Our Sunday runs," he repeats, like I'm crazy. "You don't remember? We did it for months. It was our thing." 'Our thing? Is this man actually insane?'

"The Financial District wants something that knows what it is." I looked at the case. "The cardamom knows what it is," I said. "It always has," she said. She went back to the accounts. I stayed at the counter a while longer. Four bakeries. Four things that were real and mine and running. --- Sunday dinners continued into spring with the reliable warmth of something that had been happening long enough to be simply what Sundays were. Marcus was there most weeks.

'I have work.’ Clarissa said as she typed furiously at her computer. 'You don’t work on Sundays.’ The voice at the end retorted. ‘You never said it was on a Sunday. Which Sunday do you have in mind?’ 'Next Sunday.’ 'I have to go see Marley.’

Statanhall waltzed upto me when I decided to steal a moment with my husband. We quickly moved away from each other.
