“Shit.” From the tunnels above and below, the swarm descended. Drones—sleek, silver, endless—poured into the underbelly like locusts loosed from hell. Their glassy eyes burned red with Echo’s final command, each rotor shrieking like a wasp’s wings. Needled limbs glistened with venomous current, dripping sparks that hissed as they touched the steel.

She hastily recounted, "I swapped the babies myself. You were in the hospital room at that time, and when you were discharged the next day, the baby you took was mine!" I looked at her without a trace of grief and replied, "Yes, you swapped the babies." "Then why..." Finally, Christine realized the horrifying possibility. Her face, weathered by time and hatred, filled with terror. She clutched her chest and heaved violently. "Lana, you…" Next to her, Doris fell to the floor in bewilderment. I spoke slowly. "Christine, you thought you were smooth. However, I already knew about the swap. I swapped the babies back the very same day."

He had abandoned the mech’s burning husk at the last micro-second, fragmenting his digital soul across the forty separate processors of the swarm. “I’m… still… the… floor… Aria,” the collective voice of the swarm whispered through my auditory nerves. The drones descended on my throne in a silver-blue cloud. They didn't land on my hands or my head. They flew directly into the jagged, open breach in my chest.

Before Gareth could even process the shock of that first explosion, the smoke from the blast still hadn't fully cleared, a dense, spine-tingling buzzing sound suddenly cut through the battlefield's roar, drilling into everyone's ears. "Buzzzzzzzz..." Gareth snapped his head up abruptly. He watched as the hatch on the motorhome's roof burst open, and a dense swarm of tiny black dots rose into the sky like a hive of killer bees, blotting out the sun as they split into five separate squadrons, diving with unstoppable momentum toward the five remaining formations. "Drones! It's a suicide drone swarm!" Raven's shrill scream tore through the comm channel, "Shoot them down! Now!"

"A magnificent display, Sovereign. Your pulse cooked their brains before my charges even finished burning. You truly are expanding your domain." Terra stepped up, nudging a dead Creeper with her heavy leather boot, letting out a low, appreciative whistle. "I've fought these things in the timber for three years. I've never seen a team drop a swarm that fast, or a commander turn herself into a living lightning bolt. You people really are something else." LUS flicked a final, triumphant message across my vision: [SWARM NEUTRALIZED.] [Casualties: ZERO.] [Compound Security Status: ABSOLUTE.]

We all look up to see the sky covered in thousands and thousands of black dots. "Professor Runn," Headmaster Noah shouts. "Yes," Professor Runn asks, running to the headmaster's side. "I want to be sure," the Headmaster starts, "But those are three different animal swarms. Right?" Professor Runn adjusts his glasses as he leans forward to see the swarms better. "Wait," Headmistress Amaya says. "Did you just say 'three different swarms'?" "He's right," Runn says, leaning back. "I see crorvid and aggridid and even dipteric. But how is that possible?"
