I didn't have much time to pick my things, since Castilian soldiers insisted on carrying me in their arms as soon as they saw me. Returning to the bookshelf, I choose ten books on topics such as psychology, history, and politics that I have not yet read and separate them on my desk. That should be enough to entertain me on the trip. Or should I get a couple more? Not only will the journey take time, but I have to consider that maybe we will spend days doing nothing but wait for the prophet to reveal himself … Wait. WHAT THE HELL AM I MAKING? Am I willing to have to use a public toilet for the rest of my life? And walk around with that lady's umbrella? Playing Rômulo's puppet ?!

“No change to your approach?” Rowan glanced briefly at Lily and Mara. Then back to the man. “No.” The traveler nodded slowly. “Good.” “Why good?” Derek asked. “Because if you changed now,” the man said, “the story would control you.” Silence followed. Not uncomfortable. Just thoughtful. The traveler tucked his satchel closed again. “I’ll move on before sunset,” he said. “You’re welcome to warm by the fire first,” Mara offered. He smiled. “I was hoping you’d say that.”

It was one step closer to something I wanted. “Do you want to learn more?” Trav asked, sensing my interest. “Yes, please.” My voice was filled with a genuine longing. He handed me a worn book, its cover a deep blue, and I clutched it eagerly. “Start with this one. And if you want more, we’ll go to the library.” I beamed, my heart swelling with the thought of diving deeper into something I’d always wanted to understand. It was a start. A step toward learning, to being something more than I was. Maybe even finding my place in the pack, if I stayed.

Nothing needed to. Yet something had settled into place. Something firm and unseen. Like a foundation no one remembered building. The traveler woke in a small room above a shop that sold ordinary goods. Fabric. Tools. Paper. Ink. The kind of place that existed for usefulness not beauty. The journal rested on the table beside the bed. It had not moved during the night. It never seemed to. They sat up slowly. No rush. No urgency. Only awareness. The kind that comes after long storms have passed even if the sky is clear now.

"Yvie!" I frowned and shook him off, snapping coolly, "Please watch yourself, Mr. Grant. If you came to apologize for Susie Grant, then you don't have to—I'm not interested." My coldness stung him, but he smiled wryly. "No, I didn't come for her." Then, taking a deep breath as if to steel himself, he looked at me with his bloodshot eyes as he said, "I came to apologize about what I'd done in our past lives. I know you reincarnated too, Yvie."

He could think of only one thing. When a traveler was stripped of his traveling privileges, it was done privately, and their files were labeled “Secret”. This was done to protect the traveler from his enemies who might want to take advantage of the fact that he or she could no longer escape their wrath by jumping timelines. Most of the time, the demotion was permanent, but there were a few occasions through history where the traveler was reinstated for one reason or another. He swallowed hard as he stepped through the doorway. Was he about to be demoted?

To spot my attention to the other things around, I pick the book I had earlier and scan for an interesting sub-topics. I sighed and started flipping pages again to start entertaining myself. *** It isn’t always comfortable or easy—carrying your fear around with you on your great and ambitious road trip, I mean—but it’s always worth it, because if you can’t learn to travel comfortably alongside your fear, then you’ll never be able to go anywhere interesting or do anything interesting. And that would be a pity, because your life is short and rare and amazing and miraculous, and you want to do really interesting things and make really interesting things while you’re still here. I hope you are too, and would be ever so humbled if you let me know what you thought of my little part two. Being able to explore my characters through their own points of view was an eye opening experience, and I hoped you loved tuning into Dalton, Kendra, and Jake's thoughts just as much as the lead's, Hollis and Whitney's. Despite this book taking five months to write, a month less than two of my other novels, "Not All Who Wander Are Lost" is by far my longest book, nearing 600 pages. I couldn't avoid it since there was so much I wanted to cover, and there are no regrets.
