I always found it wild that we never got a proper, official novel-length continuation. The epilogue in 'Breaking Dawn' gave us that flash-forward with Renesmee and Jacob, plus the 'wedding gift' Carlisle gave Bella—which turned out to be a chronicle of the Volturi’s past, basically a history book inside the world. I figure the story just sort of... trails off into their immortality. Everyone gets their happy ending, even the Volturi slink away to plot another day, and the Cullens settle into a weird, eternal domesticity.
But isn’t that the biggest bummer? After all that buildup about immortal laws and newborn armies, it just ends with a stalemate. Nothing fundamentally changes. They don’t have to hide anymore, sure, but it’s not like they go public or reform vampire society. The status quo wins. I guess that’s a 'happily ever after' for them, but as a reader it left me wanting a real next chapter, not just a glimpse of peace.
