she pleads, “come down for breakfast. You haven’t eaten in three days. You’re weak.” “I’d like to die, thank you,” I mutter, moving toward the balcony. The door closes gently behind her, but she doesn’t leave. I step out into the breeze, staring down at the lights twinkling like stars across a city I don’t recognize. It’s beautiful. Like a storybook. Like a lie. “Where is this?” I ask without looking at her. “The Twilight Court,” she answers, stepping beside me. “Valen’s palace.” I inch away from her, and she notices. I don’t care.

I heard him and his teasing voice, repressing a shudder at the way his eyes skewered her face and claimed her fear. Where everyone else was blind, I saw. I noticed. As if she could feel me watching her, she turned her head in my direction. By the time her eyes fell on where I once stood within the crowd, I was halfway down the hall and on my way to my first class of the day: Werewolf 101. While Professor Hopkins went on about the unpredictable nature of the rogue gene, I flitted through the textbook until I found the chapter on the Original Pack. Unsurprisingly, it was the longest chapter in the book.

The limousine started to glide forward, and Torquil's gaze widened as it shot out the window. I followed his stare; trying to view the busy streets, filled with all sorts of unique individuals, as a fairy would see them. It probably felt much the same as it had for me when I'd first stepped into the courtyard of the Twilight Castle. Exciting but also terrifying. I leaned across the open space to Torquil and squeezed his hand. He looked over at me, took a deep breath, and went calm. I felt his pulse through his fingers; slowing to a steady rhythm.
