'Caroline' is written in cursive handwriting at the top corner. Below it 'Plinio' is written in the writing of a child, probably his own.

Growing up, I never had to worry about money. In my previous life, I had felt sorry for her. She came from a run-down rural town, with an abusive father, a mother who clearly favored her sons, and a deadbeat younger brother. Due to that, I treated her kindly. The hurt in his voice killed me. “Oh, Henry.” My shoulders slumped. “I can’t be with you. You’re a prince. I’m just an American girl. I’m not special.” “You are.” He took a step forward. “You are so special.” “I am only a liability to you,” I replied. I forced my voice to stay steady. “I’m not what you think I am?” “You aren’t perfect? Beautiful? Thoughtful? Kind? Smart?” Henry shook his head. “No.”

She told me calmly and sat down beside me, I swallowed deeply and brush away the sudden sweat that formed on my forehead. "I...I don't know where to start from." I mumbled, I gazed down at my feet and sighed. I just didn't feel comfortable talking about my problems with a total stranger. 'Yea, a stranger that saved you from being dead on the street, I would like to be a stranger like that.' my subconscious mind mocked me. "Let's just say that I ran away because I couldn't tolerate the disrespect I always got for being ugly," I responded and chuckled bitterly. she must be thinking the same thing as well.

Just watched her carefully, like she was a thread unraveling right in front of him and he was terrified pulling it too fast might break her entirely. She turned away from him, walking toward the large window at the edge of the design floor. Outside, the city shimmered. Expensive buildings. Loud, busy people with curated lives. She used to wonder what it felt like to live among them. Now she was one of them. But inside? Inside she was still that girl standing on the sidewalk in her oversized thrift store sweater after being called ugly by the boy she gave her heart, and her body... to. She crossed her arms, hugging herself.

I was just focused on the book I was reading, pretending not to hear them. “Hey ugly,” one of them called out. “Hope you are not planning to show up tonight.” I pushed back my glasses that were falling off my nose and continued reading. One of them walked to my desk, grabbed my book and dropped it to the floor. “You don't ignore beauty like us.” She said, titling her head smugly. She continued “have you gotten a prom date? Oops, I forgot. Nobody will want an ugly duckling like you to be their date.”
