Others would never rise again. I stood at the center, chest heaving, Lucian’s hand locked around mine as though by strength alone he could keep me tethered. I reasoned, though my voice sounded small even to me. She shook her head, sniffling. Then, after a pause, she whispered the piece of news that made my heart skip. “Emilia… she’s mated to Alpha Hamilton.” My mouth went wide. “She is?” I asked, incredulous. Sara nodded, and I finally understood. My friend, the girl who had been my companion through so much, had her own sorrows and I was here to help her out too, the best way I could as she had always helped me and had been by my side.

The guard sneered at her, stepping closer, his breath hot against her skin. “Sure, we do,” he taunted. “You’re the Alpha’s unwanted mate.” His partner chuckled at that while looking at the ground, shaking his head. Ember froze, the words slamming into her like a blow. Unwanted. It shouldn’t have hurt, she already knew she wasn’t wanted. Thorne had never hidden it. But hearing it thrown in her face like this, by them, left her breathless.

At that moment, it was just me and Lyla, two souls seeking comfort in each other. Losing myself in Lyla, I hoped to silence the confusion, bury the hurt, to diminish the longing for Kelsey. But as the moonlight streamed through the window, illuminating the room with its ethereal glow, the harsh reality loomed over me.
