Voice 1 - “What a sweet meat of flesh! Look behind girl, no one taught you to show your back at someone?” Voice 2- “What a poor soul, to come here for her poor mate.” Voice 3- “I know the way to him; I saw him waiting for you. Come back.” Voice 4- “Follow me!” I didn’t pay any attention to them and just keep on walking forward. Voice 3- “You think you are brave? I have seen your soul cowering in fear like no other.” The voice started chuckling maniacally. Voice 2- “I can’t wait to see how her soul taste like.”

His voice was like smoke and ice as he continued, "You did well." Thomas winced. I witnessed that brief moment of vulnerability. Thomas had always been conceited and in charge. But now? He appeared to be a worried youngster. As if he had absolutely no power. I recognized then that he didn't. Thomas inhaled nervously. "Master, I—" Thomas's voice disappeared as the man raised a finger. As simple as that. Not a sound. No air. As if the words had been plucked out of his mouth. Shaun muttered curses to himself. "That isn't typical."

He usually didn't slow. That evening a voice inside was telling a story he recognised from the lower archive. Not reciting it — living it. An older vampire, speaking with the contained intensity of someone describing something they had been present for. The valley. The return. The moment the army crested the pass and saw what was waiting for them. The hall was quiet around the voice. “It feels raw. Like the energy burned something inside. But I can still think clearly. For now. The voice is just another change I have to live with.” Rhydian took my hand. “Tell me what you need. Water? Rest? Anything to make this easier right now.” I shook my head. “Just talk to me. Help me get used to this new voice. It sounds so wrong. Like I am never alone in my own head.” Rhydian smiled gently. “Your voice is lower but it is still you. I hear Soren in it. The way you choose the words. The way you pause. That is what matters. Not the tone.”

Below us, one of the children on the walkway presses both hands to the tank glass and peers in at the sleeping body inside, bored and curious, like a child at an aquarium. A technician gently pulls him away. The body in the tank does not move. And the city answers us. It does not answer in Caleb’s gentle voice. It comes from everywhere at once, from the field itself, from the light, a voice poured into the whole vast shaft from no single throat, dry and patient and vast, a voice I last heard over a broadcast in a burning house while I tore up a contract, a voice I would know at the bottom of any ocean.
