Polaris instinctively straightened up, feeling the weight of his attention.
“So,” he said, his voice soft but carrying an air of confidence, “you’re the one everyone’s talking about. The underdog who won the science quiz.”
Polaris blinked, caught off guard by the directness of his tone. “Uh, yeah. I guess that’s me,” she replied, trying not to sound as nervous as she felt.
Hero’s eyes narrowed slightly as if he were assessing her. “I wasn’t expecting much from this year’s competition,” he continued, his voice cool and even, “but I suppose you’ve made things a bit more interesting.”
