He wore an expensive suit and a luxury watch—clearly one of the wealthy residents. He placed a paper bag full of cash on the table and said: “Could you do me a favor in the underground parking garage? Afterward, this money is yours.”

The moment his eyes landed on her, something in the air clicked. “You felt it,” he said. “Yes,” she replied. “What is it?” “A Watcher,” Darius said. Maera cursed softly. “They came early.” Seraphina looked between them. “Watcher?” Darius’s jaw set. “An ancient order. Older than the council. They observe balance—and erase what threatens it.” Her stomach dropped. “They’re here because of me.” “Yes,” Darius said. “And because of what you woke.” The stronghold trembled faintly, as if something massive had settled just beyond its walls.

"Then stop me," I challenged, though my merged awareness was already fragmenting under the strain of touching fundamental rules.
