************************************************ Chris POV The news is on at the bar I'm currently sitting at drawing fellow patrons in as the news of what the police has discovered flashes on the screen along with a picture of her, her beautiful smile as bright as ever calls me in like a sirens song followed by the news that they found her in a shallow grave just outside of Benson Lake a few miles from Multnomah Falls by a couple with a dog that had smelt her decomposing body as they let him out to use the bathroom.

He hit the street first, dagger in hand. Lyra followed. The river quarter had erupted into chaos. Market stalls overturned in the floodwater. Crates floated down the alley like driftwood. Townspeople shoved past each other in panic. At the center of it— A Hollowed. Tall as a horse. Its body stitched from shadow and bone, jaw split open too wide, claws scraping sparks from stone as it lunged through the crowd. A woman slipped in the flooded street. The creature pounced. Then black shadow hit it from above.

The Shadowline By Friday, the town had already twisted Sophie into something else. Something easier to forget. Her name wasn't mentioned out loud, not in the halls, not in the diner, not even during the long, sagging sermons on Sunday. There was no funeral. There never was. Black Salt didn’t bury what it couldn’t explain. But the Bone House held her.
