Princess Cromwell and Her Six Brothers
Old growth of unknown age, some as thick as arms and others as thin as hair, crisscrossed and tangled between the trees like an all-encompassing giant net.
She reached out to push them aside, and the moment her fingers touched them, the sharp edges of the vines cut her skin. New wounds overlapped old ones as blood seeped out and mixed with dirt, forming dark red scabs in her palm.
Several times, suddenly rebounding vines wrapped around her ankle, throwing her off balance and sending her crashing heavily onto gravel-strewn ground. Her elbows, knees, and waist were spared nothing. Sharp stones tore her flesh, pain blackening her vision as she lay prone, gasping for breath.
