The message sat there, not kind, not sorry, unfinished like the door. I left it. I typed don’t and erased it. I typed nothing. I already knew I would answer if he sent another. That was the part that was not done. Not even close.

But standing here— I realized— I had never actually stopped to understand the end. The Question “If she’s complete…” I said slowly, “Then what am I?” The figure didn’t answer immediately. Instead, it stepped closer. Its form flickering softly. “You are what came after,” it said. “A continuation that refused to end.” The Meaning My breath slowed. “So I’m unfinished.” A pause. “Yes.” The Weight of That Truth Unfinished. Not broken. Not fake. Just— Not done. Blake shifted slightly behind me. “…That doesn’t sound like a bad thing.”

“I spent thirty years building a finished person. What I heard yesterday was a person mid-sentence.” Sera sat with that. At the particular grief of a child who had idealized a parent across decades of absence and then encountered them in raw, unfinished, human form. “He was mid-sentence,” she said. “That is exactly what he was. "Do you want a new sister, Andy? What do you think about letting Desiree stay with us for good?" Andy didn't respond. Instead, he turned around and ran toward his room. They wouldn’t be this careless. I click into the trash folder. It’s empty. I frown. Leah never empties her trash. She lets it accumulate the way she lets everything else accumulate—ideas, worries, half-finished thoughts she means to come back to later. The emptiness feels wrong. Like a room that’s been cleaned too thoroughly.
