Red lights strobed wildly across the shelter, the alarm blaring so loudly that it seemed to drill straight into my skull. I didn't even bother wiping the sweat off my face. I just ran, hauling my heavy precision welding kit down the hallway toward the heart of the entire shelter: the fusion core. If it blew, all 30 thousand people here would turn into frozen statues in an instant. Outside, the temperature sat at -112 degrees. Without the core's heat, no one would last ten minutes.

She stumbled a little as I pushed her through the door, and a photograph slipped out of her pocket and fell to the floor. I picked it up. It was a signed photo, and something about the face tugged at my memory. Before the apocalypse, Anna had been a singer. She brightened immediately. "Do you want me to sign one for you too? Rhett used to come to all my shows back then." I frowned and turned the photo over. On the back was a picture of Anna and Rhett together. A date was printed in the corner. March 21, 2060. The world tilted. That was the day the apocalypse hit, the day we fled, and the day Ophelia fell into the fissure and never came back up.

​The second I finally got back to my own apartment and locked the door behind me, the sheer reality of the situation began to dawn on me properly. ​I was truly back. Even the rustle of leaves sounded sharp. I eased up to the booth window and looked out. Inside my old apartment stood three figures—Alan, Bella, and Dylan. Of course they'd teamed up. A loudspeaker slid out the window. Alan's voice blasted across the complex. "Everyone, the apocalypse has started. I know you're looking for protection. I've got Caucasian Shepherds, a lion, and crocodiles. Any one of them can handle zombies. If you don't want to die, come join me. However..."

one of the guys shouted. Both of them ran as fast as they can as they traverse the small paths in the vicinity. Shawn saw a small gate across them that is open, “Let’s hide in there.” he said to her and immediately open a metal gate and hide behind the wall. “Did you see where they go? I can’t find them in here.” Shawn heard them not far away from them. “Let’s go in there, maybe they are hiding there.” They heard footsteps walking away from them so Shawn tries to peek outside, “They are gone now.” he said to Kayleigh as he sighed in relief.

Mark pretended to gasp for air twice before looking weakly at Janine. “Janine, Will knows I have claustrophobia, so why did he design a shelter without a single window? He took so much money from the O’Connor family. Is this how he does things?” Janine’s eyes darkened as they met mine. Then, she gave the order. “Smash this place.” My body stiffened, but this time, I didn’t stop them. I watched with my own eyes as she destroyed the only true refuge that would have survived the coming apocalyptic heatwave.
