I asked quietly, my voice controlled now but cold beneath the calm. Thomas crossed his arms, thinking. “It might be retaliation from the pack we defeated. They could be trying to mess with your head.” I rejected the idea immediately. “Those men wouldn’t play psychological games. I’ve been in the track long enough to know how their revenge works. They come at you direct. They don’t send packages and wait for you to panic.” Thomas nodded slowly, understanding. “Whoever did this wanted fear, not revenge,” I continued. “This was meant to destabilize me. Make me question everything, and scared if my son was safe.”

Thomas’s stomach clenched at the realization—someone was threatening him with his own death, sealing his fate with a cryptic message. If Rebecca had detected fear in Thomas at first then his reaction confirmed her suspicions. Thomas flinched at his mother’s screams. The older woman brushed past her gaping son and went over to Rebecca who laid helplessly on the ground. Quickly, she started to untie Rebecca’s bloodied wrists and ankles.

His possessiveness over Melina ran deeper. Thomas knew men like Xiao Zhan, who were far crueler to women than he was. He couldn’t have another monster in Melina’s life. Thomas is the only monster Melina is worthy of having on this earth. He’s the only one who is allowed to make her shiver in fear. Thomas felt like ripping Xiao Zhan’s head off right now for wanting his Melina. How could he want what was his? Xiao Zhan does not understand that he’s the only man allowed to see fear swim in her eyes and watch her bottom lips quiver as she tries to hold back her tears.
