Maud stood behind Beatrice and placed her hand on the girl’s shoulders, the long fingers looked like aged twigs. She squeezed gently, and Beatrice sensed the message in the action. It said, go easy, young’un. Ye don’t want to scare yer brother into stayin’ quiet.
Inside her head, Beatrice counted to ten, slowly. Then she did it again.
“Thomas, we know you found something on the beach.”
“The tablet.” Thomas said the words with such ease, Beatrice was about to press on before they registered.
