I had learned, very early, that the things you carried forward were not always the things you carried in your hands — sometimes they were heavier, and smaller, and burned in the chest the same way the pendant burned, with a warmth that had no color name and did not go out.

The vast cruel world that did not yet know what was walking toward it — not a slave, not a girl with no name, but something the ancient inscription had called by the only word that fit: planted.
