Then I closed it. I knocked once and entered. The room was quiet. A boy sat by the window, head lowered, staring at his hands. He was so thin that his tunic hung from him like borrowed cloth. His wrists were narrow, his collarbones sharp, and his dark hair had grown long enough to cover half his face. I walked over and sat two steps away from him. “Hello,” I said gently. “I am Dr. Persephone. Are you Eren?”

Third Person POV At the Smith Group's charity banquet, Jason held Susan's hand and stood under the spotlight, basking in flattery. Suddenly, the screen went black, and a statement appeared on a red background. It was a divorce notice—Charlotte's request to formally sever all ties, issued through her lawyer. Next, a clear ultrasound scan was shown, accompanied by an audio recording. "Take her blood. She's tough, so she won't die from donating some blood." Jason's cold voice echoed through the speakers to every corner of the banquet hall.

Wait a little longer, alright? Abel’: [How long would that be? There must be a time limit, right? I keep having the feeling that you’re lying to me. Ask yourself with your conscience. She told me that this was the opportunity she fought hard to get for me. … Ian finally came looking for me two weeks later. He was looking noticeably worn out when we met again. I was suddenly reminded of the fight we had over Francesca before our wedding day. I was crying in frustration, insisting that we call off our engagement. Panicked, Ian apologized profusely and tried to make things right again. When I refused to see him, he started waiting outside my door day and night.

The book was published in March, on a morning that was cold and grey in the way March mornings were. Serena stood in her study and didn't know what to do with her hands. It was not a small, quiet book. There was no possibility of it being small or quiet — not with what was in it, not with the years that sat behind it. It arrived the way things arrived when they were long overdue. With a weight that people recognised before they could explain why. As though they had been waiting for something without knowing they were waiting, and here it finally was.

"The book knows." "Trust it." "I do." She paused. "It's strange though. Feeling the book wait." "It's not the book waiting," he said. "It's you. The book is ready. You need the experience first." She looked at him. "That's more accurate," she said. "Systems again." He almost smiled. "I understand waiting for the right conditions." "The omelette." "The burner needed to be right." "The fourteenth is my burner," she said. "And then the chapter."

Turned to page forty-seven. The poem was twelve lines about waiting — not the passive kind, not the resigned kind, but the active patient kind that knew what it was waiting for and held itself ready. The kind that understood the difference between waiting because you had no choice and waiting because you had chosen to and the thing you were waiting for was worth every day of the choosing. I read it twice. Then I set the book down on the window table and looked out at the January street and thought about ten days and active patient waiting and a man who had underlined nothing but had handed me exactly the right page.
