I read the same paragraph four times before I gave up pretending. I went to the window. His car was still there. I went back to my book. The rain got heavier as the evening went on, building into a proper storm. Thunder rolled somewhere in the distance and the windows rattled with the wind. I made more tea. I turned the lamp up. I finished two chapters without retaining a single word of either of them. Every time I checked the window his car was still there. By the time the rain finally started to ease I was done waiting for this to make sense on its own.

I could not make out the words, but the tone required no translation whatsoever. Excited. Completely and thoroughly excited. I smiled before I was fully aware I was doing it. I stood and crossed to the window, pressing one hand flat against the glass. It was cold enough that I felt it all the way up my wrist. Outside, snow drifted through the pale morning air in slow, unhurried curtains.

I breathe out, pulling myself out of my trance. “I don’t know Damien; I was hearing my name,” I said. He sighed. “We have to be careful in the library. It may be enticing, but it’s dangerous, so we will look for the book together. We can take our time,” he said. I looked out the window, and I don’t know, but I feel something is there. You may be wondering, Why was I scared of falling through the window? Well, this is no ordinary window. It is clouded with clouds, and I feel like if I fall through, I am going to fall to my death because I don’t know where it leads.

Outside my window, the wind rattled through the trees; a low, mournful sound that almost made me laugh. I leaned closer to the glass, pressing my forehead against the chill. “Goodnight, sweet sister,” I whispered to the dark. “Dream while you can.”

No doors, no cracks in the walls, just a shadow of myself… Even so, I didn't relax. Since the place was full of narrow passages, I decided to walk through, till I caught sight of a dusty window left open, wide enough for me to jump through. I threw myself out through the window, crashing on the hard ground with my back slamming against the rough stones.

Instead, I sat at the window and traced the sigils from Johanis’s book onto the fogged glass with my finger. They glowed faintly. A voice in the back of my head whispered again. ‘Open the door.’ But this time, I didn’t cry. I whispered back, “No.” And the voice screamed as if it was physically hurt because of my rejection. —-- Mama found me in the morning, curled up in the window seat with Mr. Bumble and a glowing red circle still pulsing faintly around us. “You kept it out,” she said softly, brushing my hair back.

It is already furnished and it seems the landlord did a good job cleaning everything nicely before renting it out. Since we had a lot to unpack, we ordered in food just for lunch and the whole day we unpacked and arranged our things. --- It is now evening and I am sitting in my room, reading a book. The window has glass panes which are completely transparent. Not that anybody could see me through the glass because there are no houses in the proximity, but the branches of the tree and the view of the woods from my window is kind of strange! It is different…a bit creepy and at the same time quite out of the world!

My hand touched the soft fabric to pull away from the shields, but I became dumbfounded when there was nothing to be protected from, from the other side. The large gulp I took, subdued the scream that dared to break free from my body. I slowly took stealthy steps backward, but then I moved forward and traced my hand onto the wall where a window is supposed to be situated. Tears dripped from my eyes unconsciously as my stubborn hands kept on searching for the window hopelessly. They gave up their frantic search and replaced it with punches aimed at the unmovable wall. How is this possible? How did the window vanish itself? It's not possible to wipe out a whole window from a room! My room!

I wished I could be out there, but I couldn’t just watching made me feel like a fairytale princess waiting for her Prince Charming to rescue her to in my case my supposed prince locked me up in here. The glass window made me feel like the sky would be prettier without it serving as a barrier between me and the sky. I took a deep breath and focused my attention back on my book. The door swung open. The person I least expected strode in. Jackson. “Hello,” he said with a smile. “Hey,” I smiled back. “So, how’s it going?” he asked. ‘It’s awful, and I want to go outside,’ I wanted to say but I didn’t.

Chapter 35 ******Amira**** The sun was streaming through the window as I opened my eyes. The light was warm and inviting, and I felt a sense of renewal. I got out of bed and made myself a cup of coffee. I sat at the kitchen table, taking in the morning sun and savoring the warmth of the beverage. I felt a sense of possibility as I looked out the window, seeing the world in a new light. It was a new day, and I was ready to embrace it.
