I inquired.
It was quiet for a long time, but then I noticed the blanket lifting slightly, like a silent invitation. I smiled and grabbed the small opening, lifting it higher so I could slide underneath the blanket too. Willow made sure we were both cocooned, but she wouldn’t look at me. Her face was buried in the bed. I reached out, stroking my hand through her hair, and as soon as I made contact, she turned toward me, seeking my warmth. A small whimper escaped her, and I brushed my thumb over her cheek, feeling its dampness.
“Can I hold you?” I whispered, and Willow nodded, her eyes still closed.
