Part of me hoping, stupidly, for Nathan’s name to be waiting on the screen. Nothing. No messages. No missed calls. I stood still a second and frowned. The time difference nudged my thoughts into math: Thailand would be deep into the night now, maybe close to morning. He’d said he’d call back “soon,” but soon is different when you’re twelve time zones apart and sprinting between obligations. “Okay,” I murmured to myself. Don’t spiral. Give it structure.

He knew that her career was important to her now, but he could not accept it at all because it was for a year. There were 365 days in a year, which meant that they would have to be in a state of separation for 365 days. Moreover, Winsterdam was not close to Detroit. It would take more than two hours if they drove at high speed on the whole highway. He would still be able to accept it if it was a nearby city, like the small town. "Next up is Daniel and his group." Miss Close announced. Everyone had to do a presentation on Cold War. Unlike Daniel, Jenna worked independently even though she was supposed to be in his group but later she found out that working independently gave more marks.
