The hooves of our horses awaken some of the people of my pack, causing them to peek out their windows and doors to see what the commotion is about. Before long, we reach the courtyard of the palace and begin to dismount. After a quick debriefing, I release the men to go home to get some rest. Turning, I focus on the woman at my side and find myself floored. Her hood has fallen back to reveal raven hair, the light of dawn causes rainbows to shimmer in the long strands. Her beauty takes my breath away, but that isn’t what truly floors me. Her eyes, her eyes are a dull shadow violet. She’s blind.

“They think bonding makes them untouchable.” A technician nearby hesitated. “Sir… the blind zones are unstable. Pursuing them could—” Julian turned on him, eyes burning. “Prepare the hunters,” he said coldly. “If the system can’t see them—” He smiled slowly. “Then I’ll use something that can.” Back on the ship, Aiden stirred, a chill running through him. Dante felt it instantly. “What is it?” Dante asked. Aiden opened his eyes. “He’s coming,” he whispered.

The wall slid open to reveal a private escape pod. "Kill them," Garrett ordered the beast. "Leave no scraps." He stepped into the pod and the door sealed shut with a hiss. "Coward!" I screamed. I raised my gun and fired at the pod door. The bullets sparked uselessly against the reinforced steel. Titan turned its massive head toward me. Its red eyes locked onto my heat signature. It sniffed the air. It smelled Lycan blood. It ignored Kael. It wanted the prize. It wanted me.

Sebastian ordered. As Jack and the surviving mechs concentrated a blinding storm of plasma at the upper mass of the Titan, Sebastian and Harper shot straight up its colossal torso. The liquid nanolaminate of their armor flowed and shifted. From their right arms, massive, fifty-foot-long high-frequency plasma blades ignited, burning with a blinding cyan intensity. Now! Sebastian's thought echoed in Harper's mind. They struck simultaneously. The two Vanguard mechs plunged their blades deep into the seam of the Titan's massive central breastplate. The heat was so intense it instantly cauterized the wound, preventing the acidic purple blood from spraying out.

Hope bloomed within Tritan's chest as he realized that Finrir continued to fight the great white shark. Swimming toward them, Tritan suddenly halted, acutely aware of the constant gloom that reminded him of his poor depth vision. He didn't want to distract Finrir, potentially giving the shark an advantage. Choosing to hang back, Tritan yearned to make out the results of the battle. The clash of metal on teeth echoed through the water, and Tritan strained his vision to observe the figures becoming increasingly shrouded by a dark bloom—a telltale sign of blood.

Probably wasn't a no. Burney put his hand on my shoulder, as if reading my thoughts. "Time to cover up," Stan said, handing Burney a strip of cloth and a clean pillow case. He took it, shooting me an apologetic look before stepping behind me. "Ready?" I sucked in a deep breath and nodded, searching one last time for Lillith's face before landing on Aaron's. His blue eyes met mine, piercing me, holding me steady as Burney lowered the red blindfold and knotted it, blanketing my world in darkness.

This definitely wasn't on the trail map. Removing the large tactical blade that was miraculously still clipped to my belt after my unfortunate tumbling session earlier, I began to carefully cut and hack through the tangle of thorny vines and brush that was preventing me from crossing through the archway. If the structure is in good enough condition, it could serve as a far better form of shelter than the nylon one-person tent I have packed. The nylon tent that’s also more than likely soaked along with everything else in my backpack.

Gray asks him, as we all take in the wreckage that was our camp. Strips of cloth and bent and broken metal, that just a few hours ago were tents, lay in tatters, skewered all over the ground. Tons of blood stains the dark brown forest floor. Torn pieces of bloodied flesh scattered across our campsite. I can’t help the sigh that escapes my lips. Luckily, nobody is paying any attention to me. “They’ll be okay,” Bo answers, his blue eyes dark with the reality of our current situation. “I’m just glad we haven’t been giving the new ones any wolfsbane. Who knows? Maybe they’ll learn to control it on their own.”

Zach's only response was eyes narrowing and lips twirling with wicked glee. Titan focused his thoughts on Welkin's anatomy. He already knew that their skin was protected by a thin layer of tough crystal. Still, like humans, no matter what you do, you can only protect your eyes if you have the right equipment. And obviously, they don't at the moment. Luckily, their eyes weren't made of crystals. He sent the pain past the eyes and into her internal organs. Can't have her closing her eyes now, can I?
