It had become an habit of Martha's to stare at the stars on a starry night. She believed her late husband had become one of the stars shining bright and watching over them. Tears welled up in the corner of her eyes threatening to fall. She blinked in order to stop the tears from falling. Fred didn't notice the tears in his mother's eyes until she sniffed. His gaze traveled to her face.

They simply un-blurred from the background radiation of space, just past the orbit of Titan. ​They were beautiful and terrifying. They didn't look like ships at all, but like gargantuan, translucent Nautilus shells carved from frozen starlight. There were no visible engines, no weapons, no cold-processing arrays. They hummed with a frequency that was so deep it made the Respiration’s ironwood hull weep a sweet-smelling resin.
