At least, until one of us dies. Chances are, most of the people gathered here today ain’t gonna make it. I look at my family and pray it ain’t Alice or Robert who goes. I would hate to lose anyone in my family, but I’d do anything to let them grow up a little more–to find the joys of meeting their wolves. To eventually meet their mates and start a new life, like hopefully Joseph’s about to do when he returns to our home in a few months. Me, on the other hand? Well, I don’t reckon I’ll be meeting my mate. But I will be having an adventure. I shift my gaze to Bill and Andy. And a little fun in this life–before I die.

Yeah everything looks all pristine and innocent during the day, but night time around the packhouse can be pretty fucking terrifying. And I’m the reaper himself. The hide and seek play of me and my death had entertained me for a long time, but dying through puny magic was never on my wish list. It was my dream to die like a war hero, preferably on a battleground, full of snarling wolves. This scenario didn’t match the fragment of my imagination. Blitzer ran and tried to duck those lethal weapons; however, a strong force cemented his feet to the ground, he howled helplessly. “This is it, Zayden! It was nice to be paired with you.” Closing our eyes shut, we both waited for excruciating pain to take over us. “One, two, three…”

I could hear my heart racing after saying the words I'd kept to myself since learning that I was about to die. I thought I could be unaffected by my imminent death, yet I suddenly wanted to see more of the world. Gary didn't say anything. It was so quiet that I could hear my own breathing. Just as I thought he wasn't going to say anything, he finally spoke. His words made my heart descend into an abyss, though.

"Nate, I thought I was going to die without seeing you one last time. If I'd left this world without saying goodbye, I wouldn't have been able to rest, even in the afterlife." Nathan had held me tightly, kissed my forehead, and whispered, "Tegan, don't say things like that. I won't let anything happen to you. I'll always be here for you." Now, staring at the bloodstain on the bed, I let out a bitter laugh. "Nathan, you promised you would always be by my side. But I'm dying now. Where are you?"

Life couldn’t have been better. Despite that, I couldn’t help but wonder what the rest of the Duttons were up to. I knew that as long as they didn’t find a body, they wouldn’t declare a death. This led to endless speculation in society about whether the two of us were truly dead. Rumors and gossip spread everywhere, but I remained unmoved. Every day, I soaked up the sun, watched handsome men by the sea, and lived a life of pure indulgence. After half a year, though, I started to get a little bored.
