Tobias Whale Quotes Novels & Stories

The quote for this picture said: Don’t take life too seriously. You’re not getting out of it alive. From the passenger seat, Isobel burst out laughing. “Oh my God, that’s hilarious.” Holding her side, she rolled to face me. “Who is it a quote from?” Her eyes glittered with joy and I had to admit, it felt nice, knowing she realized I’d made sure to find out the answer to that question already. “Elbert Hubbard,” I said. “Or at least, it’s similar to one of his quotes.”

I asked, unable to stop the ridiculous thought from slipping out. Toby froze mid-motion, staring at me like I had just asked him to choose between breathing and eating. Finally, he shook his head, a wry smile tugging at his lips. “You have the most absurd ideas sometimes,” he said, flicking my forehead gently. “I know it would never happen because you are both excellent swimmers, and even if it does, I will be sitting my ass down and waiting for the first person to come out. You are both Alphas; figure it out!”

"Which kind yeye commandment be that." Tobi spreads his arms dramatically, like a spirit-touched-preacher on the pulpit welcoming 'sinners into the flock'. "Go ye into the world and multiply." He says, grinning triumphantly. If you are me, you would understand that smug look. I am shocked that Tobi knows a word of the Bible. I scoff "It's not me and you, abeg. " i rub my throbbing skull to settle the reverberations of that blow. "You don chow?" It sounds more like a statement than a question. I have been expecting it though.

Just pistons and oil. “You’re staring at the wake again,” Toby said, stepping out from the wheelhouse. He looked different in the maritime light—his tactical gear had been replaced by a heavy wool sweater and a yellow oilskin, but his eyes were still the same: the eyes of a man who had stood at the edge of the world and refused to blink. “I’m looking for the ripple,” I whispered. “Silas said the war changed. He said he’d give us a world of silence.” Toby moved beside me, his shoulder a solid, immovable anchor against my own. “Let him try. Silence is just a blank blueprint, Lisa. You’re the one who knows how to draw on it.”

… I covered my head and shut my eyes tightly. At that moment, a giant whale descended from the sky—but it wasn’t No. 22. The No. 22 whale was following close behind but hadn’t caught up yet. A giant standing in front muttered impatiently, “Why is there always some other whale blocking the way? Can’t they just move?” … My fingers slipped into his hair. “…Don’t be afraid. Relax.” After a long while, his hoarse voice—rough from desire—sounded beside my ear.

I stood in the middle of the room, swaying slightly. Then my legs buckled. I hit the floor hard, the pain barely registering. My body had nothing left. No strength, no will to move. Just emptiness. Tobias let out a breath, staggered toward the couch, and collapsed onto it with a grunt. He pressed his palm to his wound, eyes squeezed shut. For a long time, there was silence. Then he whispered, “I lost them.” His voice was raw. A confession. I stared at the floor.

“It counts as a lesson about what happens when someone tries to destroy what I have built. You're living proof that actions have consequences.” “So that's it? You're just going to let me rot?” “I'm going to let you face the results of your own choices. Just like everyone else in the world has to do.” Tobias stared at both of us for a long moment, probably realizing that this conversation wasn't going to end the way he'd hoped. “You have changed,” he said finally. “Both of you. You've become cold.” “We have become strong,” I corrected. “There's a difference.”

"Whatever you do, don't lose that jacket. It's my favorite." "Go on. Do your thing," I flicked my fingers in the air. "...Lucifer." God! Tobi. I have to do something. Wait, who are 'they', Tobi?

"Then why were you laughing?" "Oh, I was just... thinking funny thoughts." "Like?" I swallow thickly, hesitating briefly. "That I'm like a backpack on you." He actually chuckles. "That's cute." Surprise hits me. "It is?" "Mhm..." "That I was thinking it or me? Which one do you find adorable?" Tobias, way too tired to think, chuckles. "Both... I guess?" "You think I'm adorable?" He must be exhausted if he is giving me compliments like this without the promise of sex.

“You think this is—” “Not a prank,” Gabe said. “Not kids with a Latin dictionary. I saw a whirlpool that wasn’t there. A wave with no wind. I’ve seen engines tear themselves apart while a man smiled with eyes that weren’t his. I’ve watched a hull dent like a beer can under a bite too big for God’s ocean. And I’ve seen a message write itself in untouched sand.” His voice cracked. “I’ve seen my wife die twice. Once on the deck. Again every night.”
