I quickly stared down and analyzed the chessboard when he killed my queen with his pawn while wearing his mandatory smirk. "Why would you risk your queen? He killed the strongest one!" Lorenzo asked, confused, watching the game closely. Ignoring everything behind, I was trying to calm my breathing because I was feeling Vincenzo's burning gaze on me. I moved my hoarse towards his king and Vincenzo killed it with his camel. That was the last step from him, as I moved my camel directly to where his king was at risk. Now Vincenzo's king was surrounded by me and he was trapped.

Ten more ticks and it would be over. Three. Two. One. The two minutes for The Objection culminated in songs of silence—agreement. To the forty-ninth tick, the Elder and council head started, "Noah Silverton, King of Utrif, Ksei of blood and moon, Carer of wolves and Alpha of all Alphas. Rise." His grave of a voice stumbled over the large crowd and echoed back with a blow of cheers. Despite telling himself he was more than capable of taking anyone on, a wave of relief went over Noah. He rose.

“I know how your father got your family's wealth. I know about the major money heists that went unsolved by the police. I know that your dad was the mastermind behind the last one a few years back.” She froze. I saw something like fear pass in her eyes before she forced indifference onto her face. “All those things are baseless talk backed with no proof. What are you going to do? Go cry to the police or something?” I relaxed into my chair. Oh, I was going to love this. “I have proof, Sarah. Lots and lots of proof.” Her eyes widened when she realized I wasn't actually bluffing. My eyes hardened, and I glared at her. “I'm the rogue king. I don't do baseless talks.”

She felt like she was going to be eaten alive if she looked into them for too long. "H-hello," she stammered, dropping her head under the intensity of his gaze. "My name is Kendra Wilder." "Miss Wilder, it is a pleasure to meet you," the other man, whose gaze isn't still consuming me, said as he stood up, offering his hand to her. She took it nervously, though she gave it a firm shake. "My name is Beta Jax Clyde. I am the King's right hand."

The tears she'd forced out hung awkwardly on her lashes. "Clara, get up. Thank your sister for her blessing." Father sighed in relief. "Th-thank you, sister." Clara bounced out happily. "Girls grow up so fast, hard to keep them around." Father joked, but when he turned and saw my cold face, he looked guilty. "Rowena, the only unmated heirs left from the ruling clans are the vampire lord Thorne and the elf prince Eldrin." "I think the elves aren't a bad pick. Their looks and status are way above the vampires."

Her face changed. “No.” The ground split beneath the river. A staircase appeared, descending into darkness. Tall stone wolves lined both sides. Their faces had been broken away. Barnacles clung to their armour. White coral twisted through empty eye sockets. A cold wind rose from below. It smelled of old salt and sealed earth. The first king moved toward the opening. Grandmother lifted the Tide Crown. “Do not let him reach the tombs.” Raiken looked at her. “What tombs?” She hesitated.

“There is a tunnel beneath the catacombs. It leads to the old hunting grounds beyond the eastern forest. The King knows the path. He will guide us.” My chest tightened. “The King? He can’t leave the catacombs.” “He can’t. But he can send a map. And he can send his blessing.” I released Kael’s hand and walked toward the door. The crown blazed on my brow, casting silver light across the dark hallway. “Then we go. Now. Before the squad arrives.” We moved quickly. The catacombs were cold and silent, the blue torches flickering as we descended. The King was waiting at the bottom, his golden eyes gleaming in the darkness. He looked at me, then at the three Alphas, and nodded slowly.

Kaelor coughed, spitting a glob of crimson into the dirt. Aradaa’s hands shook as he clawed at the stones pinning him. "Gone. The walker... the Overseer... they took her." The silence that followed was worse than the explosion. The Tomb of Kings lived up to its name. No more Urekai shouts. No more static hum. Just the rhythmic, dying beep of a smashed drone somewhere in the dark. "I can't... move my legs," Aradaa gasped. He dug his fingers into the grit, pulling. His fingernails tore. One snapped back, blood slicking the stone, but he didn't stop. He couldn't.
