The sterile lab was instantly bathed in an ominous red glow as the overhead warning light began to flash, pulsing in sync with a loud, echoing ton… ton… ton — the unmistakable sound of critical failure.
The doctors froze.
Torres stiffened, her hand hovering mid-air above her datapad. Her jaw clenched, and her eyes dropped, as if willing the readout on the tablet to say something else. Hartman rubbed a trembling hand over his face, his shoulders slumping under the weight of yet another failed test.
“What’s going on?” Emily asked sharply, turning to face them, her voice edged with alarm.
Torres looked up, her voice barely above a whisper. “We lost him.”
