One, two, three… Then I heard him. Footsteps. Heavy, measured, stopping outside the nursery door. He didn’t knock. Alphas didn’t knock. But he didn’t burst in either. There was a long pause. And then — his voice. Low, rumbling, deliberately soft. “‘The Warrior Bear stomped through the forest,’” he read. “‘His roar shook the leaves from the trees. But when he found the little cub crying…’” I froze. He was doing the voices.

A scream was trapped in my throat and my entire body was frozen. The man must have heard my entry. He slowly turned around. I was met with the bluest eyes I had ever seen. They had the ability to bore into one’s sole. He took one step towards me, and I suddenly came out of my immobile state. The cup slipped from my fingers. The cup shattered as it met with the linoleum of the kitchen floor.

A dumping ground, a mass grave where no single spirit maintained any sense of what it had once been. My whole body was tense, clenching the fabric in my hands so hard that my nails bit through it and into my palms. The tears were hot and blinding. I laughed as my mates wolf placed slobbery licks on my cheeks. "Alright, alright." I laughed. I sat up and removed my shirt before standing to discard the rest of my clothes. I called forth my over excited bear, and soon my bones snapped seamlessly into the form of my huge black bear. Kane growled playfully as Tara turned and ran into the trees. Kane crashed after, and with a chuckle and a warning to Kane to be gentle with the newly shifted wolf, I retreated to the back of my mind to give them some time together.

A figure pounced on the bear, his fists ablaze with brilliantly colored spiritual flames as a terrifying aura rolled off him in waves. The figure raised a fist, casting a blow toward the bear's head. Everyone stared at the godlike man in the air in a daze. His courage was truly mind-blowing. The bear let out a howl at the sight of an attacker, its paws lighting up with spiritual flames as it swiped at the man. Yet the man turned around at an impossible angle, ducking out of the bear's grip perfectly before landing the blow on its head. A deafening sound rang through the air as the bear let out a howl of agony, falling from the air and crashing onto the ground.

Shea found herself talking about it to Carrie and her mother. Sandra instantly asked for the salutary wolf that was close to her. And on that particular day, she found another reason to fight and tame Denver’s beast. She had a new reason to take care of herself. She had found another reason to love Denver and the family that they were slowly building together.

Staying close behind them, I scouted for a safe hiding spot. As they moved closer to the bear, memories of my previous life surfaced. The searing pain of teeth tearing into flesh, the helplessness of being left to die—my heart raced, but I forced myself to focus. Once they were in position, I imitated Bonnie's voice from deep in my abdomen and let out a loud shout, ensuring it would grab the bear's attention. Then I swiftly retreated behind a large tree. The bear flinched, its body stiffening as its head jerked toward the sound. With a powerful leap, it charged.

Conri strode up to my side and gestured toward the river. Running toward the edge I gasped at seeing the large grizzly looking at me with its black eyes. Turning I ran into Conri knocking him back into the brush and to the ground. With my hands splayed on his chest and looking down at him I muttered, “Sorry, your highness! There was a big bear!”

These voices belong to the souls of the dead, and the innocent. They can haunt you, torment you, and even try to kill you if they are strong enough. They are like air. They can't be seen. They can't be touched. They can be felt, but mostly through one's hearing. They glide in the air. The strong wind can stop them, and so can fire. Nature doesn't necessarily stop them, but anything too loud for you to hear them can temporarily stop them. And that is why they are called whispers.
