Ian kissed her, and though Diane turned her head slightly, she didn't pull away. To any onlooker, they looked like lovers torn apart by reluctant separation. My face turned ashen. I silently activated the robot I had long prepared. Then I closed my eyes and never opened them again. The system handled the disposal of my body. Then it asked me: [Host, you've willingly abandoned your mission, transferring the cancer cells meant for your target into your own body. Are you certain you have no regrets?]

The drop-pod slammed into the surface of the dark-matter satellite with bone-rattling force. The doors blew off, and Marcus was the first one out, his massive golden shield deployed. He absorbed a barrage of purple plasma fire from the satellite's automated defenses. "Clear the ramp!" Marcus roared, his boots grinding into the metallic surface. Charon slipped out of the pod like a wisp of smoke, bypassing the plasma fire entirely. His shadow blades flashed, instantly decapitating three grotesque, cybernetic sentries that guarded the entrance to the server farm.

Victoria tried to retreat but Kane was already there, moving through our defensive line like it did not exist. Albert stepped between Kane and me, weapon raised. "You are not taking her." Kane's human eye focused on Albert. Something flickered—recognition maybe, or the ghost of consciousness fighting programming. "Obstacle detected. Albert Morrison. Former asset. Now classified as enemy combatant. Elimination authorized." Kane's mechanical arm shifted. A blade emerged, six inches of carbon steel integrated into the prosthetic. Albert fired. Three shots, center mass. They hit Kane's armored chest and ricocheted harmlessly.

Throb. With every pulse, the Titan grew weaker. The massive armored suit began to sag. "Empty," the boy commanded. There was a sickening crunch. The sound of a body imploding inside a metal shell. The Titan collapsed. He fell backward into the snow with a ground-shaking thud. The armor clattered, now just a hollow cage containing dust and bones. My son hovered in the air above the fallen giant. He was glowing. The purple light was so bright it hurt my eyes.

He held a long shard of the blue glass from the butterfly jar in his hand. "Get away from my wife," Bryan growled. He didn't run; he blurred. He was across the room in a heartbeat.
