We failed. In seconds, the tape connected my fingers to Lucian’s sleeve. Then his sleeve to the table. Then the table to my coat. Then my coat to the paper roll. Then the paper roll to my other hand for some reason. I struggled, pulling backward. The tape pulled tighter. “I am trapped,” I announced. Elara laughed harder. “Aveline. Stop moving.” “I cannot. I am being consumed.” Lucian struggled beside me. “Stop panicking. You are making it worse.”

A hunting trap had snapped shut around my ankle and ripped through it. I tried pulling at the trap, but the metal wouldn't budge. It felt like it was welded shut around my bone. “Help!” I sobbed, “Somebody—help me! Please!” I squeezed my eyes shut as tears streamed down my eyes. I was trapped. Looking up, I wondered if I should climb up the walls. But the pit was deep and the walls looked too smooth to climb. Even moving was a hassle as it would only make the pain and the bleeding worse.

[Evelyn’s POV] Son of a bitch!! What the hell is going on?! Oh God! I’m trapped! Please! Someone! Anyone! Help me!! Trapped. That was the best way I could describe the sensation that was being inflicted on me. I was trapped. Stuck inside my own mind with no means of control. I couldn't even bring myself to open my damn eyes. It was like someone had torn my body apart from my mind. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get a single part of myself to move.

My heart pounded in my chest, and adrenaline surged through my veins. But before I could get to it, it vanished, replaced by brick walls What? what just... I can tell by the way she looks at me that she's ready to pay keen attention to whatever comes out of my mouth. “Well,” I blew a sigh as I squeezed the bridge of his nose, “Do you ever feel trapped? like having to be caught up in the decision you made of your own will? And it feels like you want to vent and terminate the one who'd set that trap and simultaneously find your way out of the trap.”

Like maybe that’s what he’s been waiting for. The engines roar louder, and the cabin seems to close in around me. Trapped. Utterly, completely trapped.
