As soon as I reached the staircase landing, I heard another familiar voice. “Where’s Willow, Damian? The voice belonged to Zane. What on earth was he doing here? Zane should be with the heroine. I paused and popped my head down for a look. Three men stood in Damian’s living room. They were Damian, Zane, and Maddox. How did those three end up together? As my confusion grew, Damian was back with his innocent persona. “How would I know? Didn’t she disappear right in front of us?” Zane pulled a sour look. “But you’ve been purchasing a good amount of women’s products lately, Damian.”

But we had a new problem. “You like being in your head all the time, don’t you see that is what gets you into trouble?” I jumped a little, it was Tylor, thank the Goddess it wasn’t Elisa or Megan. She would have taken the biggest book in that library and hit me with it.

He remembered Lena's words: *""It's about someone who's lost everything. But finds his way again."* At the time, he had scoffed to himself. No book could fix what was broken within him. And yet, here he was. Three a.m. and awake, insomnia gnawing at his chest like it had a tendency to do. He had poured himself a glass of scotch—his second—and sat in the armchair by the window. The book was next to him, not opened.

Yet somehow it only made her figure stand out more. Our destination was Vernan. The heat there was unbearable. It felt like we were stepping into a giant furnace. The ground radiated waves of heat, the air shimmering above it. "Richard, it's so hot I'm dying. This is your fault for picking such a slow train. Hurry up and find us a place to stay!" We did not get many chances to travel, so I had only checked room prices earlier and had not booked anything yet. When we asked around at the hotels near the tourist area, we learned that almost everything was already fully booked.

However, I still managed to close the deal on skill alone and didn't let anything fall apart. Some coworkers invited me out to celebrate, but I turned them down right away. I couldn't stop thinking about Belle. I called Estelle again, but her phone was off. A cold unease crept up my spine as images of the three of them at home together kept flashing through my mind. Lately, there had been news stories about nannies turning on the families they worked for, things that ended in blood. The thought alone sent a chill through me. Estelle had always been slim from careful dieting. Lillian, on the other hand, was broad and strong. And Belle… She was just a helpless baby.

Micha nodded in understanding and we continued searching through thousands of ancient books. Then we saw it. Another book—this one titled: "WARS OF THE REALMS." We looked at each other, excited. But we braced ourselves, afraid it would be blank like the first. I opened it— And the book didn't open. The cover was iron mixed with wood, heavy and old. I tried again. Nothing. Micha suggested we burn it. Maybe melting the metal would open it. So we threw it in the fire. Nothing. Not a scratch.

"Call the police. Dial 911!" Mom cursed and complained, "Your dad won't let me. That boy is a master at chess. Your dad found his match and now plays several rounds with him every night after work. When it matters the most, men are always useless. Your dad included! "New Year's is in two weeks. How are you supposed to come home like this? Bonnie, tell me the truth. You really don't owe him money? Could it be a romantic debt instead?" This was a complete disaster! An absolute disaster! Why had I not thought to disappear without a trace?

When we got inside, there were still a lot of people but not as many as the roaring people down the street. "Miss, Santelli. You're here," the female wearing the cheapest sheath dress said, her frizzy hair blocking my view. I raised my mental eyebrow when I heard her implied 'you're late' greeting. Playing along I said, "Yes. I'm very sorry. The afternoon traffic was a nightmare." "That's no problem, Miss Santelli. Right this way." She led me to a long table with a chair in the middle and millions of Times Magazine copies stacked nearby. I smiled and gave a slight wave at the people inside the library and took my seat on the chair.
