A Pawn in Your Game
We stood beneath a large sycamore tree, facing each other.
Zach's voice was rough when he spoke, "How have you been all these years?"
"I'm good," I replied calmly.
"I've missed you."
A shiver ran down my spine, and I pressed my lips together, trying to hide the dryness in my mouth.
"Thanks for remembering me, but…" I gave a light laugh. "I'm getting married."
I showed him the ring on my finger to prove I wasn't lying.
Zach's composure broke for a moment, his mouth opening and closing, as if he didn't know what to say. Finally, he muttered, "I wish you happiness."
