Once Upon a Tryst
“If you want your freedom, fly.”
I smile, holding my hands open to give him a chance to get away. When he doesn't move, I throw the bird in the air. Weak, he can barely fly, having spent so much time as my pet that he has forgotten what it means to be free. We all watch him sputter, unable to gain altitude, crying weakly at the open windows above, unable to find the strength to fly higher than a few feet above our heads.
Slowly, I reach down and pick up Tristan’s crossbow. I aim for the bird and release the arrow. Striking him directly in his heart, he falls from above me with a bloody thump.
