I wasn’t allowed access to such books at the palace—they were reserved only for the healers and the educated men—and I wonder if I may finally find my answers here. I’m distracted, though. My skin itches, and every time I see the word “wolf” on the page, I think of Ethan’s eyes. Every time I shift position on the bed, I think about how he massaged me. Every time I catch the smell of woodsmoke drifting from one of the rooms below, I’m reminded of his scent. Twilight arrives, and my room is painted in grey shadow. I’m reading about how a wolf bite can activate the wolf gene in a half-wolf, when someone knocks on the door. I drop the book.

Twilight bit her lip, taking a deep breath before standing and approaching the door. Her eyes met a cold, piercing gaze staring back at her. “What are you doing?” Twilight asked as Eric led her to a quiet corner. “Eric,” she called, but before she could take another breath, she was suddenly pinned against the wall. In the next second, he slammed his lips onto hers. His mouth devoured her. It wasn’t a kiss—it was as if he were sucking the air straight from her lungs. Twilight became lost, her head spinning, body igniting as he shoved his warm tongue into her mouth, tasting every inch and leaving her breathless.

The title page and table of contents looks normal, but I keep flipping pages to get to chapter one. Two more pages and I’m staring at the first chapter, titled “Finding a Companion.” I almost missed the title completely because my eyes were drawn to the center of the page where there was a rectangular shaped wooden box. All the pages had been cut through the center to fit this box inside, and there was something carved into the box. It was an image of the compass rose and the words “You’re My True North.” I glance back up to the first sentence of the chapter and it reads, “When preparing for an adventure, the first, and possibly most important, decision is who you will choose as your comp

I pull back with a gasp, but no one else seems to notice the golden glow that is beginning to permeate through the book. I look up at the men. “Do you see that?” I whisper as the words begin to shift, and the writing begins to change. They all shake their heads and gaze down at the book intently. Creighton looks back at me in question. “What do you see?” I shake my head as I try to form words. I’m sure I look like a gaping fish. “I…I…the book is glowing, and the words are changing into…” I have to stop because my body begins to get cold, and my vision begins to dim.
