It was a daily battle with her long curls, and she cursed at her mongrel hair, a strange combination of midnight black locks with blue streaks, all-natural, that had a weird white shimmer to it in the dark. Huffing with the effort, she piled the stubborn mess on top of her head and secured it there, scowling as she looked in the mirror at herself. She wasn't blind and knew that guys found her attractive, she was a tall girl for seventeen, almost six foot and well built, for some reason she always maintained a curvy, muscular body, despite eating whatever she liked, and while other girls her age struggled with acne and baby fat, her tanned skin was always blemished free and body tight.

Leonard blinked, taken aback, while Lila’s perfectly composed mask faltered, the faintest flicker of color rising in her cheeks. Mira, blissfully unaware of the shock she’d caused, simply turned to Julian with wide eyed seriousness. “Mama told me witches pretend to be nice, but they’re not. She looks exactly like that.” Julian crouched slightly so his eyes were level with hers, his voice low but still carrying to everyone present. “Well,” he said, his gaze briefly flicking to Lila, “you’re a smart girl for spotting the difference.”

He recognized his father too, like, who wouldn't. Harry Water can put on a hundred masks, paint his body red, but no one could miss the commanding presence he held. I was just focused on the book I was reading, pretending not to hear them. “Hey ugly,” one of them called out. “Hope you are not planning to show up tonight.” I pushed back my glasses that were falling off my nose and continued reading. One of them walked to my desk, grabbed my book and dropped it to the floor. “You don't ignore beauty like us.” She said, titling her head smugly. She continued “have you gotten a prom date? Oops, I forgot. Nobody will want an ugly duckling like you to be their date.”

Sleep eluded me that night. Every time I closed my eyes, his face materialized: those storm-gray eyes, that cruel, beautiful mouth. The way he had looked at me, as if I were something he yearned to shatter, or devour. I struck the thin mattress beneath me. "Stop it," I hissed, my voice a ragged whisper. The door clicked shut behind me. The mirror showed a stranger. My left cheek was puffed and purple, the skin stretched shiny over the swelling. One eye was nearly closed; the other stared back at me with dull recognition. Ugly. That was the word that settled heaviest. Not just bruised—ugly in a way that felt permanent.

I asked, only somewhat joking as I referred to the Untouchable that tormented and raped Olive as he pleased. ‘He-who-must-not-be-named’ wasn’t one of the nicknames she’d given him, but I couldn’t resist a good Harry Potter reference. That being said, Olive was much more creative in the nickname department. Among my favorites were asshat and the dickless wonder, but the last thing I wanted to bring up was Blaze Madden’s penis. I said dryly. Harry grabbed the assistant’s waist. This caused her eyes to widen and a light layer of pink to stain her cheeks, freezing her in place. While he continued stroking it, he didn’t take his eyes off mine. Disgusted to see this situation, I told him, “Oh, please! Can’t you be more of a pig? Leave her alone, you fucking sick bastard!”
