It taught me to stay small, to keep quiet, to build my desires in private, for the world was not a safe world for a man like me to love openly. There was a shiver of knowing that went across the room. He saw nods, saw glints of tears. "This book… this is the map I never had. It's not a perfect map. It's got the wrong turns on it.". It's got storm patterns sketched in black. It's got places where the cartographer was so scared he almost capsized the whole thing into the drink. He took a deep breath. "But it also has the navigational coordinates for a harbor I had no idea existed. It has the stars I was shown to navigate by.

"The territories that weren't included weren't excluded. They just weren't yet." I looked at the map. At the three territories, clearly marked. At the eastern regions stretching beyond them, unmarked. Not excluded. Not yet. The correction had just told me where it was going next. I sat down and waited for noon.

The system. Mara took them. They stayed at the barrel for a long time. Longer than usual — the February cold kept the market crowd thin and the city had its quiet Saturday quality, the lower frequency, the world running at a different pace. At some point, Caleb opened the cartography book and read her a passage about the first maps — ancient, imprecise, made by people who drew the edges of the known world and left the rest blank. Terra incognita. Unknown territory.

I asked, my fingers itching to trace the lines that seemed to pulse with a faint light. "This," he started, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart race, "is the key to understanding where we are headed. All these years, we've been shielding you from the truth. It's time you saw the world as it really is." As he laid the map out before me, my eyes landed on the stark differences. There were areas marked in bright colors and symbols that seemed both familiar and wildly strange. I saw that the boundaries were drawn differently than the ones I knew, outlining territories that felt alive, pulsing with promise.

His finger moved above the last Kingdom, “And Drara, the great desert, which the nomad tribes call home. The second biggest Kingdom.” But there was more to the continent than the kingdoms. King Rhobart’s finger moved East from Drara to a forest that started at one point and ended at the other point of the map—from South to North. “The Black Forest. And from here, going all the way East, we have the Uncharted Lands. Home of the Orcs.”

I stared at the map spread across the table, my brow tightening without me realizing it. It was the newest territorial draft, completed only weeks ago after months of painstaking work. The borders were marked in bold, dark lines. Mountain ridges, rivers, and dense forests were divided into distinct color blocks. Strategic locations were annotated with careful precision—high ground, blind spots, water crossings, natural choke points. The cartographer had devoted nearly half a year to it, and my father had rewarded him with a sum generous enough to spark quiet envy among the pack.

"The river that cuts through all hell is just one of its many territories, and, yes, she already knows that you are back, and she would not risk attacking her in front of me no matter how tempted she was.” Faye pulled some plates away from the center of the table, where a map was located drawn on the dark wood. The lines were interrupted by the river that had no end, even if I knew that my own territory was totally made of fire and the lavas of a volcano in constant eruption. My territory was still the largest of all on the map, although personally I had only seen the castle and the river of fire, having no idea where the rest of all that spacious kingdom would be.

The Book in the World The book was titled simply: The Healed Territory. Elara had not planned the title — it arrived when she was writing the twelfth chapter and she understood it was right because it was accurate. Not the healing process, not the governance methodology, not the theory. The territory after the healing. What it was to live there.
