She might have been working for someone outside Morano enterprise. A few minutes later, a black van pulled up quietly in the parking lot outside. The backup team had arrived. Three men stepped out. They wore dark jeans, black jackets, and earpieces tucked behind their ears. They were the security, but not the kind with uniforms. These were the undercovers; the internal surveillance team known only to handle difficult operations. They were fast, and they looked serious. One of them carried a black laptop case. Another had a small toolbox. They walked in quickly, knowing damage has already happened, and there was no time to waste.

"What are you up to?" I took a deep breath, knowing I couldn't keep it a secret from Cole any longer. "There's no point in keeping it a secret from you," I whispered. Cole's eyes locked onto mine, his expression intense. "Does this have anything to do with that Renato Marino gang membership card?" I nodded, feeling a shiver run down my spine. "Yes." Cole's face darkened, his jaw clenched. "What's going on?" he demanded. I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But something in Cole's expression told me he needed to know the truth. "I'm going undercover," I began.

MATTEO POV The tinted glass of the rear window rolled down exactly three inches. I stood under the shadow of the concrete portico, my hands buried in my pockets as the black SUV idled near the main steps.
