The Devil's Broken Doll
The doors opened soundlessly.
Inside, the air was warmer. Drier. Heavy with the scent of smoke, iron, old leather, sealed magic and the faint sweetness of embalming resin. Shelves spiralled upward around a circular chamber, each level lined with locked boxes, forbidden books, confiscated relics, sealed prophecies, broken angelic instruments, bone flutes taken from extinct priesthoods, blades that had killed saints, crowns removed from kings who had knelt too late, and scrolls whose languages had been outlawed by Heaven before Hell learned to sharpen rebellion into government.
